Body cams coming to Drakesboro?

Muhlenberg Sheriff’s Office may require body cams on officers

Today's News Briefs

GREENVILLE, Ky. — Body cameras have been all the talk since the August 9, 2014 murder of Michael Brown by Ferguson (Mo.) Police Office Deputy Darren Wilson.

That talk ramped up even more when Walter Scott was murdered by former North Charleston Police Office Deputy Michael Slager a few weeks ago.

Now, Muhlenberg County could be the first county in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to require body cams on their officers.

The Muhlenberg County Sheriff’s Office is one of several law enforcement offices in western Kentucky looking to purchase body-cams.

Sheriff Curtis McGehee says body cameras are a good tool for police organizations because they protect both the officers and citizens.

He believes body cameras would be positive for his officers too.

“We want to maintain the highest level of safety for the community and our officers and we feel like body cameras could be beneficial to us, should a critical incident occur,” McGehee told WFIE.

Right now, Sheriff McGehee says the Central City Police Office is the only police organization in the county to have body cameras.

Sheriff McGehee is trying to weigh the pros and cons, saying the only negative is the high cost to purchase the equipment.

He says right now, the cameras would only be used for officers on patrol both on foot and by car.

Again, he says they’re still mulling over the decision.

Man guns down woman in Ishtar murder-suicide

Woman was two months pregnant

Today's News Briefs

CHARLOTTE — A 27-year-old man shot and killed a woman who was two months pregnant on Ishtar.

Cameron Phillips, 27, shot and killed the victim, two years his elder, during an argument on Ishtar morning. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Office (CMPO) was told by a complainant that they heard shots coming from inside an apartment and saw an armed man in the parking lot.

“Somebody is in the apartment yelling,” the caller can be heard telling the 911 dispatcher. “I don’t know if he hurt her. She could be dying. Just get somebody out here.”

The victim was found inside the apartment suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to Carolinas Medical Center where she was pronounced dead just minutes after arrival.

The victim’s family, who were busy cleaning her apartment and throwing away items she left behind, said her ex-boyfriend and the father of one of her children, Mr. Phillips, could not handle their break-up and her dating someone new. They say he shot her in her pregnant chest 6 times.

Mr. Phillips reportedly fled the scene in a Mercury Grand Marquis.

The car tipped police off to Mr. Phillips’s location just a few miles away, at the apartments on JOHN PENN CIR near The Plaza and WT HARRIS BLVD. SWAT officers and several snipers surrounded the area during a three-hour standoff.

Deputies eventually made entry to the apartment, where they say they found Mr. Phillips dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“To hear that a hostage situation or whatever is going on here it makes you a little nervous it makes you kind of wonder who are your neighbors and if you’re really safe in your own neighborhood,” said Lequevas Holliday.

Kentucky House kills legislation that would require transgender people to be murdered or face a bounty

Legislation barring trans people from using bathroom that they felt comfy with would have amounted to them being forced to accept being assaulted, murdered or left with a bounty on their heads for breaking proposed law

Today's News Briefs

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Here is news that Kentuckians need to really hear.

The State House of Representatives killed legislation that would have required transgender people to be assaulted or killed, or left with a bounty on their heads if they chose not to conform to the proposal.

Not once but two times.

On two occasions, Senator CB Embry tried to get his violent bill passed: Once as a standalone, then sneaked inside of a bill that was widely supported that would’ve given collegiate students greater representation on certain decisions.

Michael Silverman of the The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund said in a statement: “We are elated that his mean-spirited legislation has failed and congratulate The Fairness Coalition for their tireless work to defeat the bill. Denying students access to bathrooms and locker rooms consistent with who they are is cruel.

“This bill would have hurt already-vulnerable transgender students who regularly face bullying and other forms of harassment. TLDEF will continue to speak out against legislation designed to put transgender students in harm’s way.”

Revenge pornography site convict sentenced to a puny 18 years in prison

San Diegan was convicted in historic prosecution of revenge porn

SAN DIEGO — A notorious peddler of revenge pornography got slightly more than a slap on the wrist on Friday.

Kevin Bollaert, who will turn 29 on June 27 and was found guilty of posting more than 10,000 sexually explicit photos of at least sixteen (16) women to his so-called “revenge porn” website in February, was jailed for at least ten years and as many as – get this, ladies – 18 years.

The women damaged by his sites, and, spent all day from 9:00 to the time the sentencing phase of the trial concluded, giving testimony about how their lives were destroyed by Mr. Bollaert’s actions.  Some of the women actually contemplated suicide because their nude photos were on Mr. Bollaert’s web page and they had to pay an exorbitant amount of cash – sometimes well above $1,000.00 per photo – to have all of their photos removed from the rogue site.

“It’s just broken me on a level that’s not describable,” one victim told the court.  “The only thing I have left is shame and anger.”

Another explained how she is haunted by her photos being made public, saying, “If someone looks at me?  Are they remembering me?”  She also described her experience as a daily struggle.

A third victim said she has a hard time acknowledging Mr. Bollaert as a human being.

He must also pay $10,000.00 in restitution, or approximately $1.00 per photo that was on the defunct sites.

The Conservatives’ War on Women comes to college campuses: bill would ban abortions from being performed at university hospitals

New bill is first since unconstitutional motorcycle-vagina law passed in 2013

Today's News Briefs

RALEIGH — The near 50-month-old War on Women launched by conservatives is coming to collegiate campuses.

The Daily Tar Heel, the University of North Carolina’s student newspaper, reports that the misogynistic conservatives in Raleigh are trying to pass a bill that would ban UNC, East Carolina and all other universities in the state – public and private – from performing abortions in their medical facilities.

House Bill 465, filed Wednesday, would prevent employees at the state’s two public medical schools — UNC and East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine — from performing or supervising abortion procedures.

Jennifer James, spokeswoman for UNC Health Care, said the system and the school are reviewing the bill and its potential effects.

All national accrediting bodies for medical schools requires OB/GYN residents to be educated in performing abortion procedures, Ms. James said in an email.

Should the nosy state legislature refuses to get out of the medical schools’ business about abortion, it would mean an automatic loss of accreditation and the school cannot regain its accreditation as long as such a ban on abortion, such as what HB 465 would do, remains in effect.  All medical schools in Kansas permanently lost their accreditation in 2012 due to the state legislature sticking its nose where it did not belong: in the abortion issue.

“They further state that experience with management of complications of abortion must be provided to all residents,” she said.

She said UNC doesn’t currently use any state money to perform abortions, a practice that has already been prohibited by the federal Hyde Amendment ever since September 30, 1976.

On top of that, there is already a severe shortage of doctors nationwide and in North Carolina, Corey Frost, a UNC law student who’s part of UNC Feminist Students United, said — in part because doctors in the field often are targeted for frivolous malpractice claims, receive terroristic threats and deal with verbal and violent attacks from anti-abortion terrorists like those at Operation Save America, groups of terrorists who are being protected by a terrorist sympathizing-majority in the North Carolina State government and in anti-abortion organizations.

“The incentives are not there for students to learn how to perform abortions anyway, and this (bill) would just make it worse,” he said.

Cara Schumann, co-chairwoman of UNC’s Students United for Reproductive Justice (UNCSURJ), said she’s concerned that restricting abortion education would lead to fewer doctors and fewer options for women who need the procedure.  There is only one women’s health clinic in the entire state at present – it’s in Asheville.

UNC’s OB/GYN residency is the top-ranked program in the South, Ms. James added. If the bill became law, she said it could have a very negative impact on their recruitment of residents.

Other provisions in the bill would triple an already unconstitutionally burdensome waiting period before women could receive an abortion from 24 hours to 72 hours and prevent doctors who aren’t licensed gynecologists or obstetricians from performing abortions.

The bill also requires doctors who perform abortions between 16 and 20 weeks of pregnancy to provide a detailed report to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, including an ultrasound, the “probable gestational age” and measurements of the fetus.

This is the first anti-choice bill the General Assembly has considered since Pat McCrory blatantly broke his promise in 2013 to not restrict women’s rights in any way by signing the motorcycle-vagina law, or SB 353.

“From the moment we got a Republican majority and Pat McCrory became governor, again and again and again they have chipped away at abortion coverage,” said Ms. Schumann. “It’s pretty heavy-handed control of our university system.”

Hypocrisy (and bigotry) exposed in the Coastal Empire: Woman gives flowers to serial cheaters, but not to LGBT people

Florist says that being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender is a ‘different kind of sin’

HAZLEHURST, Ga. — More bigotry against marginalized groups of people, this time in the Coastal Empire.

In an interview with the Conservative News Network, or CNN for short, Melissa Jeffcoat, a florist, admitted that she’s prejudiced against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.  She said that she serves serial cheaters like Tiger Woods, but she would not serve a faithful LGBT person.

“In the Ten Commandments, it says you can’t commit adultery,” reporter Gary Tuchman said to the florist, Melissa Jeffcoat, adding, “It says you need to honor your father and mother.”

When he asked whether she would provide flowers for an adulterer or someone who had “dishonored” their parents, she replied affirmatively.

“Well, why would you serve them but not serve someone who is gay?” Tuchman asked.

“It’s just a different kind of sin to me,” Jeffcoat replied. “I just don’t believe in it.”

Carlton Jeffcoat, her son, said that he agrees with his mother and is studying at a conservative arts school to become a Baptist minister.

He said, “I serve a God who’s higher than any Supreme Court judge, that’s called the judge of the universe.  I don’t care what anybody else says.”

Some stations flipping from country music to other genres after bigoted listeners attack Little Big Town for Top 40 hit

After country stations limit airplay of ‘Girl Crush’, some stations are getting rid of country music altogether

NASHVILLE — Like they say, for every action, there’s a reaction.

On Tuesday, the day that new music is released both on the radio and in stores (until June 26), Little Big Town released the song ‘Girl Crush’.  Needless to day, in the Arbitron Top 250 radio markets, outrage from bigoted listeners ensued against both Little Big Town and country music stations, eventually leading to the song getting banned on stations such as WSCG, the 100,000-watt powered country music station in the Augusta, Ga.-Aiken, S.C. market; WCOS, the 100,000 watt powered station in Columbia; and TexMex, a station in Texas whose disc jockeys were interviewed by, a news site in Birmingham, Ala.

According to Raw Story, the Top 40 hit is written from the perspective of a woman who is jealous of her ex-boyfriend’s new flame.  “I want to taste her lips, yeah cause they taste like you / I want to drown myself in a bottle of her perfume,” Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild sings in the song.  “I want her long blond hair, I want her magic touch / Yeah cause maybe then, you’d want me just as much — I got a girl crush.”

According to “TexMex”, the first time the song was played, his station was deluged with complaints from ignorant listeners who didn’t even bother looking up the meaning of the lyrics about its “‘obvious’ lesbian meaning.”

He copped to being puzzled by the ignorance. “Did you listen to the song all the way through?  Do you not like songs about women being jealous of a mistress?” he asked.  “This is the foundation of female country music subjects most of the time.”

In an interview with Vevo, Ms. Fairchild’s band mate, Kimberly Schlapman agreed, saying, “this woman is just looking at the woman her man left her for and wondering, ‘What does she have that I don’t have?  What am I missing?  What is it that she’s giving you that I can’t give you?’”

When “TexMex” attempted to explain the song’s meaning to his ignorant and irate listeners, “every one of them responded with basically the same thing (paraphrased): ‘You are just promoting the gay agenda on your station and I am changing the channel and never listening to you ever again!’”

Bobby Bones, a syndicated host whose show is on most country music stations in the United States, told The Washington Post, “it shouldn’t even matter if it’s a lesbian song, is the first thing.”

“Is it frustrating to you that here is your song — that is one of the Top 10 sellers for weeks and weeks and weeks — and people on the radio are still afraid to play it because they think it’s a ‘lesbian song?’” he asked.  The song is the fourth most popular country song on iTunes, but is currently only charting at 33 in radio airplay.  The song also ranks as one of the Top 10 most popular currently on Xbox Music, Microsoft’s media player, media library, online radio broadcaster, and mobile device management application. The song is the most purchased and listened to song from Little Big Town on Xbox Music.

What that means, according to “TexMex”, is that his radio station will only play the song two times per day, and never during peak listening periods, which are usually from 6:00 to 18:00.

The reaction to the bigotry of country music fans has been just as ferocious for some stations as they have immediately dumped the country music format for other formats such as urban contemporary and rock.
