Microsoft cuts off alternate ways to upgrade to feature_2 on Windows 10 Mobile

Redmond, Wash. — There are a few days before the Mobile World Congress gets underway.

With Microsoft having been thoroughly defeated by archrivals Apple and Google in the computing industry, on Wednesday, the formerly cool Redmond giant removed any and all upgrade paths on all Windows devices.

What that means is if you are rocking any pre-2015 Lumia or the 2016 alcatel Fierce XL, support for your phone, now stuck on the Anniversary Update that was released on August 2, 2016, will end on October 30, which is the last Tuesday in October.

After October 30, only seven Windows phones used in the US will still be supported.

Support for the Microsoft Lumia 640, Microsoft Lumia 640 XL and the Microsoft Lumia 735 will tentatively end on June 29, 2019 as those phones are now stuck on the Creators Update.

On June 30, 2019, only four Windows phones used in the US will still be supported.

Support for those four phones – the Microsoft Lumia 950, Microsoft Lumia 950 XL, alcatel Idol 4s and the HP Elite x3 – will end when the ball drops on Times Square to ring in 2020. Those phones are on the feature_2, which is the latest OS update from Microsoft.

Support for all three of Acer’s Windows 10 phones – the Liquid Jade Primo, Liquid M320 and Liquid M330 – ended on January 9. Support for the Coship Moly X1 and Coship Moly W5 also ended on January 9.

Have a Windows Device? DO NOT install the latest update!

Redmond, Wash. — Today, Microsoft released a build that will brick your computer and phone.

The build is known as 16212 and it is known to cause all computers and phones running the Windows operating system to get stuck in a boot loop and brick.

Dona Sarkar, the chief of the Windows Insider program, issued this tweet:

Here’s how to suspend the downloads of new builds for Windows 10 Mobile.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to Update & security
  3. Choose Windows Insider Program at the bottom
  4. Pick Stop Insider Preview Builds
  5. From the menu select Pause updates for a bit
  6. Under the Pause area toggle the switch to On

Unfortunately, once the download begins, the only surefire way to stop it is by turning Airplane Mode on your phone, disconnecting you and your device from the internet on data AND Wi-Fi.

If you have a MacBook, like we do at Aiken Area Progressive, take solace in the fact that it is one less thing you have to worry about (since your PC does not run Windows), unless you have multiple Windows 10 Phones like yours truly does.

MyTube is free – but only for the Windows 10 Phone users and only until Friday

mytube may 22 update

If you are among the 2% of Americans – and 1% of global people – who have a Windows 10 Phone, here is some good news if you are looking for a YouTube client app.

Ryken Studio, the creators of the third-party app MyTube, is very appreciative of the Windows 10 Phone users, no matter how small the userbase is. To show their appreciation, the app, which usually costs 99¢ in the Windows Store, will be free until Friday afternoon EDT.

To get the app on your phone, click on this below.

Two more apps to be removed from all three mobile OS platforms

This past year has been a bad one for the mobile phone industry as several high profile apps such as Vine have been removed from the Windows Store, App Store and Google Play.

Now, you can add two more apps to that list.

On Monday, SongArc announced that it was removing its app from all three mobile platform stores very soon in an announcement on Facebook. Read the rest of this entry »

T-Mobile de-lists the Alcatel Idol 4s from online store

Bellevue, Wash. — Just a few minutes ago, Aiken Area Progressive learned that T-Mobile removed the listing for the Alcatel Idol 4s from their store.

No reason has been given for the removal of the device, but it was the highest rated phone the network has ever sold, with a rating of 4.7 stars out of 5.

We will get in touch with T-Mobile soon to find out why the Idol 4s listing was removed. The device was sold starting on Veterans Day 2016.

In the meantime, you can contact your local T-Mobile stores to see if they still have any in stock.

Facebook has yet to get rid of their sexist, gymnophobic policies, but they found time to remove older Windows and Android apps

Menlo Park, Calif. — The arrogance and incompetence of Facebook continues to be glaringly obvious.

Since we helped Laura Bates and Everyday Sexism report on #FBrape on May 22, 2013, Facebook has done nada to combat misogyny and excessive violent content on their site. Nor have they done anything to adjust, or get rid of, their arbitrary policies of removing non-sexual nude content (including breastfeeding photos and videos) on any of their sites.

However, they somehow found time to tell users on Android 4.x or lower and Windows Phone 8.x that the Facebook and Messenger apps will be deleted and rendered useless after Friday. Read the rest of this entry »

Cellular PCs are a massive failure in the making

Redmond, Wash. — When one person thinks of cellular, they think of a Windows phone or a small IPad or Android tablet.

When people think of a PC, they think of a MacBook or a Windows desktop product (desktop, laptop, notebook, netbook and/or tablet).

Now, Microsoft wants to make the Cellular PC a thing.

Big mistake. Read the rest of this entry »

Here’s the best Reddit thread you will ever see

Usually, when we post about Reddit, we post about the armpits of the site (such as the r/mensrights subreddit).

However, today, we have an awesome part of Reddit that I’ve been following since August 2, 2016 that I want to talk about.

It’s the r/windowsphone subreddit, and I could not help but be happy about this particular thread from a user named charlotteplusplus.

There are roughly 1.5% of us in the States using a Windows Phone, which makes great threads like this all the more meaningful.

Other women who loves window phones, say hello!

We could use a lot more women on our platform! Read the link above and prepare to feel awesome!

AT&T removes all new Windows 10 Phones from site

Dallas — If you are looking to order a new Windows 10 Phone, you are out of luck if you want the carrier with the largest LTE footprint.

On Friday, AT&T removed the listings of all new Windows 10 phones. Only the Used listings of the Lumia 640 and Lumia 950 remain on the site.

The good news is that the Barnwell AT&T store still has brand new Lumia 950 phones in stock, despite the recent rash of thefts at the store. The Aiken, North Augusta, Orangeburg, Augusta and Statesboro stores still have the phone as well, but it is unknown if any of those stores still have the Lumia 640 in stock. We know that Barnwell no longer has the Lumia 640.

The Lumia 950 costs $299.99 at the AT&T physical stores. You can still pick up a dual SIM unlocked phone on the Microsoft Store or eBay web pages and put it on AT&T, Consumer Cellular, Cricket or Straight Talk for $50 more.

Gay pride emoji goes live for Fast Ring Insiders on Windows 10 Mobile

Redmond, Wash. — If you have a Windows 10 Phone and you are on the Fast Ring, you will get a very good surprise.

On Thursday night, unbeknownst to yours truly, Microsoft released the first new build for Fast Ring Insiders in nearly six weeks. This build is the first to be numbered above 15000 – in fact, it is numbered 15007.

It comes with a lot of new features. Although it comes with only one new emoji, it is big, especially if you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, asexual or gender non-conforming.

What that means is that Microsoft’s Windows is the first of the mobile operating systems to have the rainbow emoji available. Hopefully, it will not be too long until the gay pride emoji makes its way to the Slow and Release Preview rings, and the Production side of Windows 10 Mobile.

Apple and Google are expected to release the emoji for the IPad, IPhone and Android devices, respectively, before the end of the winter.

Here are the phones in which the gay pride emoji can be downloaded to (Fast Ring only):

Acer Liquid M330
Acer Liquid Jade Primo
Alcatel Fierce XL
Alcatel Idol 4s
HP Elite x3
Microsoft Lumia 550
Microsoft Lumia 640 LTE
Microsoft Lumia 640 XL LTE
Microsoft Lumia 650
Microsoft Lumia 735
Microsoft Lumia 830
Microsoft Lumia 929 (Icon)
Microsoft Lumia 950
Microsoft Lumia 950 XL
Microsoft Lumia 1520

Happy updating, Fast Ringers!

Even with the death of the Lumia, Windows Mobile to maintain 2% market share in the States heading into 2017

Redmond, Wash. — On Friday, the Lumia line was officially killed off, leading to Windows Mobile’s worldwide market share dropping like a boulder from the Kentucky mountains to the bottom.

Heading into 2017, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile’s market share is only decimal points around the everywhere around the world.

Everywhere, that is, except for in Microsoft’s home country: the United States.

Heading into 2017, the market share of Windows Mobile has remained steady since March at 2%. Meaning at 1 in every 50 smartphone users, the US is the nation that you are the most likely to see a Windows Mobile user. Read the rest of this entry »
