New York City — Tiffany Cabán, the candidate who made sex worker rights a major part of her campaign, has won the election to become the Democratic nominee for District Attorney in Queens.

With 99% of the vote in, Cabán led by 1,100 votes over Melinda Katz.

Sex worker rights, much like marijuana legalization three years prior, is an issue that Democrats can no longer ignore. And it showed in New York on Tuesday night.

“We won the Queens district attorney’s office!” Ms. Caban told supporters Tuesday night. “They said we could not win, but we did it, y’all.”

Ms. Cabán constantly railed against the system. She called it unfair for those who are not as fortunate.

“As a public defender, I saw every single day in court that if you were black, if you were brown, if you were low-income, if you were an immigrant, if you were a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, the system wasn’t on your side,” she said.

The elections were a result of longtime District Attorney Richard Brown’s death. He died in May at 86 years of age.
