Conservative policies criminalizing safe sex lectures lead to massive increase in sexually-transmitted diseases in Texas schools

Crane Independent School District sends a letter to parents about diseases

CRANE, Texas — Texas mandates conservative policies on sex education, such as abstinence only, be taught at schools, with criminal bans on teachers teaching pupils about safe sex.

Those policies are a direct contributor to the massive spikes in sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs for short, in schools.

At the Crane Independent School District, there has been an outbreak of several STDs, including chlamydia. That caused the district to send a letter to parents of Crane High School pupils informing them that 20 cases of chlamydia had been confirmed at the school.

Roughly 312 pupils attend Crane.

And that’s just a microcosm of the rampant rise in STDs across the Lone Star State. There has been a 31% increase in the numbers of primary and secondary syphilis diagnoses in Dallas County from August 2012 to August 2013, according to the county’s Health and Human Services.

A report done by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Wisconsin Population Health Institute shows that there are 600 new cases of chlamydia for every 100,000 people in the El Paso/Cuidad Juárez Binational Metropolitan area. Earlier this year, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 8 of the 11 states with the highest rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis were in the South – places where abortion providers are barred by law from teaching sex education courses to kids and where teachers are barred by law from lecturing kids about safe sex.

State health officials had notified the district of a significant number of chlamydia cases reported in Crane County and adjacent Upton County. Crane District officials plan meet with the school’s advisory committee of teachers, parents and school officials to ‘discuss’ the situation Monday, all the while refusing to attack the Texas Legislature in Austin for the major role they played in the STD spike.

Chlamydia is curable, but if left untreated can cause permanent damage to women’s reproductive systems.

Couple dead from domestic dispute in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. — A man and a woman were found deceased inside of a residence in Pima County.

Tucson Police Department deputies said that the man and woman were found lifeless with ‘obvious signs trauma’ when they arrived on the scene.

A neighbor called the TPD about a domestic fight brewing between two people around 18:00 Saturday. Tucson Police deputies revealed the fight had then turned physical and deadly.

TPD said at this point there is no outstanding suspect, which leads them to suspect that this incident was a murder-suicide.
